right now we have developing news to tell you about. we've just learned tesla is cutting jobs. >> business and tech reporter scott mcgrew is following this story. scott, is this really a surprise? >> well, it is a surprise as to when it came and how it came, but this is something tesla has hinted at in its yearly report that it issued just at the end of the year. it said it expected to get some efficiencies on the assembly line. so it says it is cutting some jobs on the assembly line as we ramp up the model s. apparently they're learning how to make the model s better and better and quicker and quicker and some of those jobs are going away. they do say those are temporary jobs. now, tesla implies about 4,000
11:12 am
people. they won't break down how many actually work on the assembly line for us so we're not sure how many jobs are affected, but the company does say by the end of the year they hope to have more employees then than they do now so perhaps hiring in the engineering department. i've got other news for you and that is the dow industrials. good morning, dow industrials. 14,264. you see it on the big board there. that is an all-time record. the previous record was 14,200 set in 2007. it's a bit hard to explain the fervor on wall street. you've got the sequester, the trouble in europe, great britain, european union in recession. and, jon and marla, if you wanted to be a real spoil sport, ruin everybody's fun, the way you calculate the dow is by adding up the prices of the 30 industrial stocks, right? there's more complicated math later, but the point is here it doesn't take inflation into account. so if you then compare it to 2007, we didn't beat the record.
11:13 am
but phooey on that. i've got one more for you and that's google. it's setting records, spiking this morning at 838 before settling back a bit. apple is even a little hi higher too, trading places with exxon. so as of right now 1114, apple is the most valuable company in america. >> march 5th will go down in the history books. >> for sure, lots of records. >> good stuff, scott. thank you very much. we move on to weather now. rob mayeda is here to tell us about rain on the way for us. >> right now the numbers we're seeing going up would be wind speeds around the bay area as we see the wind picking up out of the south. a cold front on approach late this afternoon. in the north bay we'll see winds up to 30 miles an hour. you can clearly see the rain offshore. there's a big area of low pressure which will spin a cold front our way which unfortunately means we'll head out to the official kickoff for the bay lights, be prepared for breezy and at times rainy conditions.
11:14 am
temperatures in the low 50s after 7:00. there you can see the rain blasting through the bay area. tomorrow morning we'll see scattered showers and then i think the next window of widespread rain is going to develop again into thursday. as cold air aloft settles into the bay area, look east of san jose. you've got snow at mt. hamilton. even the hills south of livermore indicate we'll probably get snow levels down close to 3500 feet or maybe locally lower as we get into thursday night. that is something to also watch. friday notice how the showers cartwheel away from the bay area. that's the transition to drier weather that we'll see arriving as we head toward the weekend. today mostly wind to start, we'll be mostly cloudy by mid-afternoon. then the rain arrives after sundown for most of the bay area today. then tomorrow scattered showers, cooler temperatures and highs in the mid-50s. friday we clear out and that's the beginning of another drying trend that will place us back into the 60s and 70s again by the time we get out of this upcoming weekend. so stormy weather on the way the next three days or so and then things clear out just in time

for saturday and sunday. back to you, marla. >> thanks so much. new worries in florida after another sinkhole opens up. this one was found around 6:00 this morning at a home in pin nell as county. a woman inside the home called 911 after she heard a cracking noise. several homes in the area have been evacuated as a precaution. no one was hurt. now, this new sinkhole comes just days after a sinkhole opened up in a nearby county swallowing a man as he was just sleeping in his own bed. that hole is now filled with debris from the demolished home. a total of five cardinals still need to get to vatican city before a date can be set for the start of the conclave to elect a new pope. they are expected to arrive sometime tomorrow. today marks day two of the preconclave meeting. anne thauompson has a look at what's happening behind closed doors. >> reporter: here at vatican

city they closed the sistine chapel before the conclave to elect the new pope. the cardinals will vote for the 266th pontiff of the catholic church, but we still don't have a start date for that conclave. >> i believe the feel of the cardinals is we want to have enough time in the general congregations so that when we go to the conclave itself, it's a time of decision. >> reporter: only 110 of the 115 cardinal electors are actually here in rome. now, this morning all the cardinals who are here, they held another meeting and at that meeting they approved a message to be sent to benedict pope emeritus and also scheduled a prayer service wednesday evening open to the public in st. peter's basilica. at that service they will pray for the good of all the catholic church. now, we also understand that at this morning's meeting 11
